Telogen Effluvium
Telogen
effluvium is a form of hair
loss that arises from the changes in a person’s
hair growth cycles. Though this condition is considered to
be an important cause for alopecia, it is a poorly defined
hair loss condition with not much research done to support
this condition.
General thinning of the hair over a period of months is the
main characteristic of telogen effluvium. It is those who
have recently undergone some trauma recently, which may be
in the form of some major surgery, some sever and dangerous
illness and childbirth who are more prone and may suffer from
telogen effluvium. Once this trauma is overcome, the signs
of telogen effluvium tend to subside with time.
It is usually when one or more factors tend to disturb the
normal the normal growth cycle of hair that you find telogen
effluvium setting in on a body. It is also when lots of hair
is pushed from the hair
growth phase into the resting (telogen) phase that telogen
effluvium starts in a person.
Telogen hairs are loosely attached to the scalp and
fall off easily
As the roots of telogen hairs are attached loosely to the
scalp, they tend to fall off easily. However this unusual
behavior of hair is something that is temporary, and can be
reversed too.
There are many causes of telogen effluvium; but all of them
lead to the alteration of a normal hair cycle. Some of these
causes are temporary, where there is regrowth
of hair after some time. Then there are also cases of
persistent causes for telogen effluvium, that lead to continuous
hair loss.
Causes for telogen effluvium are divided into three types;
general health causes, an inadequate diet and stress. In fact,
many dermatologists have proven that too much of stress can
lead to negative hair growth, and thus persistent telogen
effluvium. It is not actually know how stress can affect hair
follicles.
Actual picture of what goes on in telogen effluvium
However it is suggested that hair follicles are invaded,
and surrounded by a network of never cells when in stress.
Even any chemical activity that exists in the nervous system
of a person has its share of effects on hair follicles.
Telogen hairs are usually in the growth stage, and at the
most, a hundred hairs may fall off the scalp per day. The
greatest problem of telogen effluvium is that lots of hair
tends to enter the resting phase of the hair cycle. This tends
to lead to greater shedding of hair than usual.
Unlike other forms of hair loss, there is no point of using
products like Minoxidil and Rogaine for treating telogen effluvium.
This is because these products
in no way help in treating the condition of in accelerating
re-growth process of hair.
It is only by finding and eliminating the cause for telogen
effluvium will you be able to control hair loss, and stop
the re-occurrence of telogen effluvium in the scalp anymore.
Of course, don’t expect miracles, it is only after some
time of eradicating these causes that you find some relief
from telogen effluvium.
