Female Thinning Hair
Hair
loss in women is not as bad as hair fall in men, but is prevalent
in life. Though men can adjust to life with bald heads, to
a woman, it is very degrading to lose hair as their hair is
an important part of their self image. This is why female
thinning hair proves to be very stressful to many women.
Unlike men, genes and heredity are not the only factors that
lead to female
hair loss. There are other triggers to hair loss in women
like pregnancy, chemotherapy, thyroid hormone deficiency,
some diets, some drugs and even infections of the scalp. There
is however a great advantage of female thinning hair over
male baldness which is the fact that unlike men, women hardly
ever go bald.
Aged women tend to suffer most from female hair loss
The most a woman may experience is lots of thinning and reduction
in the diameter of their hair shaft, especially in the forehead
and crown of the skull. Hair loss in women can be noticed
more in aged women, and not in young women.
And usually, hair loss in women is usually temporary where
with the right treatment; it is possible to induce healthy
re-growth of hair.
To treat female thinning hair, you first have to find out
the exact cause for female hair loss. The most common cause
is genetics, which is hereditary and called androgenic alopecia.
This hair loss may start at the start of puberty, but usually
starts at the age of 40.
In fact, many a times, hair loss is much more in menopause.
Though there may be overall female thinning hair, it is when
the woman reaches the age of 40 years that hair loss is most
dominant. This form of hair loss is usually inherited from
any side of the family.
Increased estrogen levels during pregnancy leads
to female hair loss
The cause for alopecia areata is not known; however research
has proven that auto immune disorders can trigger hair loss
by the body attacking its hair follicles. With this form of
hair loss, the follicles and its surrounding regions tend
to get inflamed wherein follicles retreat into the skin layers
to induce hair loss. This in turn cuts off the supply of nutrients
to blood follicles and thus, hair loss.
In some women, the increased estrogen levels in the body
during pregnancy makes hair follicles move to growth phase
and thus, hair loss. It is after parturition that the hormone
levels return to normal wherein hair follicles move into the
cessation phase and increased hair loss after childbirth.
Some drugs lead to female thinning hair
Chemotherapy is a common cause for hair loss. It is the strong
medicines used in this treatment that controls the hair cells
of the matrix, poisons hair follicles and then makes the scalp
turn bald. Even hypertension medicine, blood thinners and
cholesterol drugs cause hair loss.
Stress, dieting and surgery where there is mental stress
in the body leads to female thinning hair. There are some
women who suffer from pulling their hair, because of some
depression. Counseling can help cure this female thinning
hair.
The best treatment for female hair loss in these arenas is
to eradicate the cause for the independent types of female
hair thinning. Once this is done, hair loss is controlled,
and usually, hair also starts regrowing.
