Female Hair Loss
It
is quite normal for women to start worrying because of thinning
hair, and hair loss. However unlike men, hair loss in women
is not so drastic, and is usually a temporary occurrence where
finding its solution is rather easy.
Female hair loss is also called androgenetic alopecia, which
is a hereditary form of baldness. This type of baldness affects
few women of age 40. Usually, female hair loss starts at menopause;
however sometimes it may also start earlier. The main reason
for hair loss in women is the declining estrogen levels as
hormonal changes in the body tend to make hair go thin.
The other causes of hair loss in women are changes in metabolism.
As hair loss is due to fluctuations in these levels, the loss
is temporary, where hair loss stops and hair starts re-growing
once these metabolic levels stabilize.
Not many women go bald
It is comforting to learn that women seldom go totally bald.
It is only men who are more prone to going completely bald
with hair loss. What women usually undergo is excessive thinning
of their hair, with which their scalp can be seen to others,
and is rather unsightly.
Female hair loss is common in pregnancy because of the excessive
production of oestrogen in the body. This is a temporary phase,
where once the baby is born, the hormonal balance in the body
is reversed and hair starts growing. Nothing much can be done
to treat this hair loss; just try applying some hair tonic
to initiate hair re-growth.
Female hair loss is also attributed to crash diets, and physical
and emotional stress. However this type of hair loss usually
starts after a prolonged period of time, and once stress is
restored, hair loss also stops. So in such cases, the best
treatment option would be to reduce the amount of stress in
the body.
Frequent dyeing of hair can cause female hair loss
Sometimes, drugs can lead to female hair loss. The most common
drug inducing hair loss is chemotherapy drugs which attack
hair cells to cause hair loss. Even some prescription drugs
that are given for thyroid hormone deficiency, lupus and diabetes
and dieting supplements tend to induce female hair loss. This
type of hair loss tends to terminate once these drugs are
discontinued.
Even frequent dyeing and the chemicals in some products like
perming solutions can induce female hair loss. If your hair
is healthy, these treatments will not do much to your hair,
as long as these treatments are not frequent. However if there
is no gap or time for hair to recover from these chemicals
on your hair, then there is a chance of hair turning brittle
and breaking off.
Consult your doctor if there are no improvements
In such cases, female hair loss products and treatments that
are readily available in the market should be sufficient to
strengthen hair follicles when applied to the scalp. So it
can be said that the best product for female hair loss can
be rendered only if and when you know the exact cause for
the hair loss.
However if there are no improvements after these treatment
options, then it is advisable to consult a certified dermatologist
for a complete diagnosis and treatment plan for your hair
loss problem.
